Immersive Experiences

Word Dance Theater offers a variety of experiences for groups and organizations that would like to have a more immersive dance experience than a class provides.

Workshops and Intensives

HALF DAY:  This 2.5 to 3 hour experience begins with a breathful and organic guided warm-up designed to draw the dancer deeper into their bodily awareness and ease of movement.  From there we will continue with in-place and in-space movement motifs drawn from  existing choreography.  Lastly, we will learn the entire dance and share it with one another.

“It was a pleasure to have you in our presence exposing these young dancers to one of the many forerunners, forms & techniques of American Dance…Preserving the Legacy!”  Katherine, Duke Ellington School of the Arts

FULL DAY: We will begin the day with a short lecture replete with pictures of Isadora Duncan, considered the “Mother of modern dance”, and the art that inspired her.  With our brains and imaginations awakened, we will move into increased bodily awareness through floor and standing exercises which apply the principles of the Duncan technique.  Structured improvisations around thematic material will further stimulate the dancers’ imaginations and expand movement experience.  Throughout the day, time will be provided for dancers to reflect on their experiences through journaling.  These insights and emotions will provide context for learning a short dance from the Word Dance Theater repertory,   The day will conclude with reflection and discussion of our shared and individual journey.

“It was great having you at WAISDEA. It was a wonderful lecture demo, and you should be very proud of your achievement”.  Vladimir, Director National Cathedral Dance Program

“I cannot begin to put into words what an incredible experience Saturday was for me…I have not stopped talking about it or feeling how it has impacted my body.”  Karen, workshop participant

Residencies

RESIDENCIES provide an opportunity for students of dance within colleges, conservatories, universities and other educational institutions to experience daily classes in technique, improvisation, composition, and dance history, often culminating in a performance.

  • SHORT RESIDENCY: Lasting from one week to a month, these residencies consist of multiple technique classes and rehearsals resulting in the creation of a thirty (30) minute “Salon” performance by the students.  The Salon can be performed on campus or off site in museums, galleries, etc.  This residency also includes the possibility of two (2) community outreach programs, such as master classes or lecture/demonstrations.

  • SEMESTER RESIDENCY: provides students and faculty with the opportunity to perform in a reconstruction of one of Word Dance Theater’s evening length, multi-disciplinary dance/theater productions (see all productions at www.worddance.org/main-stage-production).  These evening-length shows provide a unique opportunity for Dance, Theater, and Music Departments to collaborate on one project, and gives students an opportunity to experience the joys and challenges of cross-disciplinary collaborations.
